William H. Ropp enlisted April 22, 1861, at Abingdon, Virginia. At the time of this letter he was serving with Company K, 37th Regiment of Virginia Infantry, part of Stonewall Jackson's forces during his campaign in the Shenandoah Valley. He was captured July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg and confined at Fort McHenry until he was sent to Fort Delaware later in the month.
